Short abstract from the book:
Kittiwake is an abundant breeding bird in the Faroes, with estimated 160,000 pairs. It is also a common visitor on migration and during winter in the Faroes. 1,024 kittiwakes have been ringed in the Faroes, mainly in two separate periods, December-April and June-September. 36% were ringed as chicks, 1% as first-calendar year birds and 63% as older birds. There are 23 recoveries of kittiwakes ringed in the Faroes, 8 of them from abroad. There is a single recovery of a bird ringed as a chick and recovered after two years or more. There is no winter recoveries of Faroese ringed kittiwakes. 125 kittiwakes ringed abroad have been recovered in the Faroes, they had been ringed in Norway (56), Britain (42), Russia (14), Iceland (10), Denmark (2) and Canada (1). Recoveries in the Faroes of foreign birds during the breeding season come from Britain (7) and Iceland (1). Foreign recoveries during the winter are from Norway (22), Britain (19), Russia (7), Iceland (5), and Labrador, Canada (1). The main causes of recovery are hunting, either by shooting (32%) or capture (18%), and accidental death in fishing equipment (5%).
