Short abstract from the book:
Puffin is a common breeding bird in the Faroes, with approximately 550,000 breeding pairs (2004). 6,394 puffins have been ringed in the Faroes, the first in Viðvík, Vágar in 1924 and most in 1997 (678). Puffins have been ringed from April to October, most in July (2,092) and August (3,705). 56% were ringed as chicks. There are 435 recoveries, most from 1999-2001 (218). 97% have been recovered in June-August. Most are recovered within 10 km of the ringing site. Only four recoveries are from abroad. Puffins apparently have a large range during the breeding season. Puffins may start nesting away from where they were raised: a puffin ringed as a chick 11 August 1994 on Skúvoy was recorded both when four and five years old , 72 km N of Settorvu, Viðoy. There are no recoveries from August to February. A recovery from France suggests that some migrate S. Puffins ringed abroad have been found in the Faroes in winter: 2 from England, 8 from Scotland, 24 from Norway. Young puffins from Norway winter throughout the N Atlantic, but older puffins appear to winter mainly in Norwegian and Faroese waters. The longest-living puffins was recorded as breeding at an age of 16 year and 10 months. Many puffins are recovered at an age of more than 10 years.
